CHAPTER 24

They were just starting their fifth game of checkers when Peter came back to camp.

Gabriella had won every game so far.

Matthew came to the door of the cottage to get Christopher.

“Peter’s back,” he said. “He said he has a message for you.”

Christopher grumbled something about there being a perfectly good reason for having a second in command.

But he pulled himself away from Gabriella anyway.

His sense of responsibility was undeniable.

He blinked, stepping out into the afternoon sunlight.

Peter dismounted, secured his horse, and walked quickly toward Christopher.

“Sir,” Peter said.

“Did you find a doctor?” Christopher said.

Peter ran a hand over his face.

“Sorry, Sir.” He shifted from one foot to the other. “No.”

Christopher took a deep breath. Straightened with his hands behind his back. “Why not?”

“The doctor was unavailable,” Peter said. “There was a battle.”

Of course there was.

A girl with a twisted ankle wouldn’t exactly be a top priority right now.

“I’m sorry, Sir,” Peter said.

Christopher turned around to leave.

“But Sir,”

Christopher turned, tried to hide his irritation.

“I have a message for you.”

Peter pulled a piece of paper from his pocket. Took a step forward and held it out.

Taking the paper, he carefully unfolded it.

“You’re free to go,” he said.

With Peter gone, Christopher carefully unfolded the paper and read the message.

Go to Vicksburg.

Three simple words.

But that’s all it took to upend his world.

He turned the paper over, but didn’t expect to see anything else.

If the message was intercepted, it would mean nothing to whoever read it.

But Christopher new exactly what it meant.

It meant that instead of waiting here for their next assignment, they were summoned to join the battle at Vicksburg.

Though it probably didn’t come from Grant, Christopher couldn’t ignore it.

His loyalty was too strong.

He couldn’t keep his men here idle when they were needed for battle.

He stuffed the paper in his pocket and ran a hand through his hair.

This created a whole host of new problems.

Primarily the little sprite of girl sitting on the sofa in the garçonnière beating his tail in checkers.

He knew what he had to do.

He just didn’t know how he was going to do it.

Yet.
